Some teams are using video more and more, such as the Brewers using it instead of an advance scout, while others are using tools like the iPod to make video available anywhere as a training tool. The brilliance of a scout is that he sees things in a way that normal people don’t. I’ve never sat with a scout — or even talked with one on the phone — without picking up something that I didn’t know, a new way to look at things. The value they have is immense, so please don’t take my discussion of shortcomings of the system as any sort of slight at them. […]
